Shell type needle roller bearings use a thin, formed steel shell as the outer race. This shell presses directly into a machined housing bore, eliminating a separate outer ring and shrinking the radial envelope versus a machined ring bearing. One common construction, the drawn cup, forms this shell by drawing steel into a cup shape rather than machining it. These bearings span both metric and inch dimensions, in caged and full-complement roller designs, with open-end and closed-end variants for through-shaft and blind-bore mounting.
